MKV and MP4: flexible media packaging versus common playback
MKV is the video file extension of Matroska, an open multimedia container project. It can package video with multiple audio tracks, subtitles and other data, which makes it useful for complex media files. That flexibility is not universally supported by browsers, devices or upload forms.
MP4 is the MPEG-4 Part 14 container standardized by the MPEG group. It also packages media tracks and is widely used for web and device delivery with compatible codecs such as H.264. It is a practical sharing choice, but does not support every combination of tracks that an MKV might contain.

MKV and MP4 describe how media is packaged. The video and audio streams inside still determine compatibility, quality, and whether encoding work is required.
Review extra tracks
MKV files may contain multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, or attachments. Check the finished MP4 when those elements matter because delivery-oriented output may not represent every item in the source container.
Avoid unnecessary enlargement
Raising resolution or frame rate cannot create missing source detail. It normally increases processing time and file size, so keep source values unless a destination specifies otherwise.
