MP4 and MP3: a recording versus its soundtrack
MP4 is the MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardized by the MPEG group to package media tracks together. A phone video or meeting recording usually combines compressed picture and sound. It is convenient for watching and sharing, but an audio player or audio-only upload may need the soundtrack in a separate file.
MP3 comes from MPEG Audio Layer III, developed for compact digital audio. It reduces file size by discarding some sound information, which is why it is called lossy compression. Broad player support and small listening copies are its strengths. It cannot carry the video and is less suitable than an uncompressed format for repeated editing.

Choose MP3 settings for speech or music
The result is audio only
Visual information, captions embedded as video, and on-screen context are not part of the MP3. Keep the MP4 whenever the images or timing cues may still be needed.
MP3 cannot improve source audio
Most MP4 audio is already compressed. A higher MP3 quality can reduce additional loss, but it cannot restore frequencies or detail removed from the original soundtrack.
Speech and music need different priorities
Voice can often use mono and a lower sample rate for a smaller file. Music and spatial ambience usually benefit from stereo and a higher-quality profile.
