Extract sound from an MPEG video as MP3
Use MPEG to MP3 when an older video recording contains an interview, lecture, performance, or other soundtrack you want to keep as an audio file. MPEG is the source video format. MP3 is the audio-only result. This conversion does not preserve the pictures or create a transcript.
MPEG video and MP3 audio: related names, different files
MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, the group behind a family of media standards. A .mpeg or .mpg file commonly holds MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video and sound, often from older recording or export workflows. It preserves the complete movie, but its video takes space you do not need for listening alone.
MP3 is MPEG Audio Layer III, an audio compression format from that same standards family. It makes portable listening copies by removing some sound information. It is widely supported and compact, but carries no picture and is not a lossless substitute for the original soundtrack.
Use this converter to take the sound from a .mpeg video. If file properties call an existing .mp3 MPEG Audio Layer III, it is already MP3. For a filename ending in .mp4, use MP4 to MP3 instead so the upload filter matches your source.

MPEG and MPG filenames
Video archives can use either .mpeg or .mpg extensions. Choose the converter that accepts your source extension. Changing a filename alone does not extract or encode its audio track.
Check that the recording has sound
Play the source first. A video without an audio stream cannot produce a meaningful MP3, and conversion cannot recover missing dialogue, remove background noise, or repair clipped sound.
Choose voice or music settings
Speech / Podcast is useful for spoken recordings. For music, start with Recommended or High quality and preserve stereo when the source contains distinct left and right channels.
How to convert MPEG to MP3 online
Convert one representative MPEG file and listen to the beginning and end. Confirm the duration and sound quality before saving a recipe for the rest of the archive. Keep the video originals for future editing.
The free allowance is 2 files per batch, up to 100 MB each, and 20 conversions per 24 hours. No account or watermark. Files are uploaded for server-side processing, then scheduled for deletion after 24 hours on the Free plan.
Make listening copies of an MPEG archive
Group recordings by source and save an MP3 recipe for each recurring set. A lecture archive can use a voice-focused profile, while music performances need a stereo listening copy.
A free account includes 1 saved conversion recipe. Paid plans add larger batches, more recipes and delivery to Google Drive or Dropbox after you start each batch.
