JPEG and WebP: two ways to deliver photographs
JPEG, developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, uses lossy compression to make photographs smaller. Its broad compatibility makes it a common camera export and upload format. It does not support transparency, and repeatedly saving a JPEG can add visible compression artifacts.
WebP is Google’s image format for web delivery. It offers lossy and lossless modes as well as transparency. It can reduce the size of photographic images at an acceptable visual quality, but the saving varies with the source and settings. A publishing tool must accept WebP for that smaller copy to be useful.

Reduce downloads without over-compressing photos
Start from the best available source
A JPEG has already been compressed. Use the highest-quality original available so that the WebP encoder is not forced to preserve or amplify artifacts from a small preview copy.
Do not upscale for delivery
Increasing pixel dimensions does not add real detail and creates more data to encode. Keep the source size or resize downward to the largest size the page actually renders.
Measure in the real page
File size and visual quality both matter. Check fine texture, faces, gradients, and text overlays in the browser rather than choosing a quality number in isolation.
