Create 3G2 output for a legacy 3GPP2 workflow
3G2 is associated with older mobile devices and 3GPP2 media workflows. Choose it when your receiving device or application names this format explicitly. A modern MP4 delivery is usually more useful for current phones, browsers, and publishing platforms, so confirm the requirement before converting.
MP4 and 3G2: modern delivery versus a legacy mobile requirement
MP4 is the MPEG-4 Part 14 container, standardized by the MPEG group. It combines media tracks in a widely used file for recording and sharing. Its flexibility is an advantage on current devices, but a legacy mobile system may require a different container and a restricted set of codecs.
3G2 comes from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2, or 3GPP2, associated with CDMA mobile services. Like 3GP, it packages mobile multimedia, but the two extensions are not interchangeable requirements. Its usefulness today is mainly access to a particular older device or workflow, rather than better quality or broader support.
FastConvert produces 3G2 with MPEG-4 video. Confirm that the destination accepts both the container and that codec before converting. Keep the MP4 for modern playback. Create a 3G2 copy only where that specific requirement exists.
3G2, 3GP or MP4?
| Destination | Format to choose |
|---|---|
| Specifically requires .3g2 | Create a 3G2 file with the resolution and codecs required by that device. |
| Specifically requires .3gp | Use MP4 to 3GP instead. Renaming the result is not a compatibility test.MP4 to 3GP |
| Modern phone or website | Keep a supported MP4 unless the destination tells you otherwise. |
Use the device’s playback specifications
3G2 and 3GP are different targets
The names are similar, but a device that asks for 3GP should not be assumed to accept 3G2. Use the matching converter and check the destination specifications for the complete playback requirements.
Keep output settings conservative
Older devices may restrict resolution, frame rate, file size, and supported audio. Choose settings within those limits and test a short clip rather than transferring a large batch before checking compatibility.
Retain the source quality
A smaller delivery version cannot replace the original MP4 for later editing or modern distribution. Keep the source and check that text, faces, motion, and audio remain usable in the reduced output.
How to convert MP4 to 3G2 online
FastConvert uses MPEG-4 video for 3G2 output. Start with a sample at device-supported dimensions and verify picture and sound on the destination. Reuse the tested recipe only for devices with the same requirements.
The free allowance is 2 files per batch, up to 100 MB each, and 20 conversions per 24 hours. No account or watermark. Files are uploaded for server-side processing, then scheduled for deletion after 24 hours on the Free plan.
Keep a recipe for each legacy destination
Save a separate 3G2 recipe for each compatible handset with different playback requirements. That keeps its dimensions and quality settings ready for the next delivery.
A free account includes 1 saved conversion recipe. Paid plans add larger batches, more recipes and delivery to Google Drive or Dropbox after you start each batch.
