How to reduce image file size in bulk
- Open Batch settings and choose an output format your website or client accepts. Adjust quality and test one representative image before processing a larger batch.
- Upload your images. Optionally enable resizing for oversized originals; use Apply to all when changing settings after uploading.
- Select Compress images and download the results. Compare file size and visible detail with the originals, then reuse the settings for the rest of your images.
Three ways to make images smaller
- Choose a format your destination accepts
- Start with WebP for web assets, compare AVIF for photos, or try JPEG XL when your destination supports it. Use JPEG for broad compatibility. The format guide below explains the tradeoffs.
- Balance quality and file size
- Lowering lossy quality can reduce file size while changing fine detail. Inspect text, gradients, and product edges at their intended display size. A higher quality setting cannot restore detail lost in an earlier export.
- Resize oversized originals
- A photo intended for a 1,200 px area may not need its original camera dimensions. Reducing dimensions can help more than repeatedly lowering quality. Allow for high-density displays when choosing your target size.
WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL or JPEG: which should you choose?
Choose a format your destination accepts, then compare one sample. The smallest file is useful only if it looks right and opens where you need it.

Compression settings and their tradeoffs
Start with format, dimensions, and quality. Open a setting below when you need more control; available controls depend on your output format.
For lossy output, reduce Quality gradually and inspect text, gradients, and edges in the downloaded image. Stop before the changes become distracting. Compare formats by appearance and file size, not by identical quality numbers. A higher value cannot restore missing detail.
In Dimensions & framing, resize oversized originals to suit their display size. Keep enough pixels for high-density screens or zoom. Fit within dimensions preserves proportions without cropping; Crop to dimensions removes edges. Keep your original for larger future uses.
WebP, AVIF, and JPEG XL offer lossless encoding. Choose it when preserving pixel detail matters more than the smallest download. WebP near-lossless allows small changes for potential savings. Lossless encoding does not reverse other edits, such as resizing or cropping.
Under Encoding, WebP, AVIF, and JPEG XL let you increase Encoding effort. This gives the encoder more work to look for a compact result; it takes longer and savings can be small. Keep moderate effort for quick recurring batches, then test a higher setting on a sample.
PNG Compression level trades processing time for possible size savings without reducing pixel detail. PNG Quality is a different control: lowering it limits the color palette and can cause banding or change colors. Check gradients and brand colors before applying it to a batch.
Keep transparency for assets placed on different backgrounds. In lossy WebP, reducing Transparency quality may save space but can roughen soft edges and shadows. Replacing transparency with a solid color changes how the asset can be reused; JPEG always requires that tradeoff.
Metadata is removed by default. Keeping it can retain information useful to a client, but also adds bytes and may retain sensitive details such as location. Removing it is not a substitute for optimizing dimensions and quality; the size savings depend on the source.
