Create a ZIP file online

Add files, whole folders, or files from Google Drive and Dropbox, and download them as one ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, or 7Z archive. The archive is built in your browser, so your files are never uploaded to FastConvert. Free, with no sign-up.

How to create a ZIP file

  1. Step 1

    Add files or folders

Drag files or whole folders onto the page, browse for them, or pick files from Google Drive or Dropbox. Folder structure is kept inside the archive.

  2. Step 2

    Choose the format

Pick ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, or 7Z, set the compression level, and name the archive.

  3. Step 3

    Create and download

Select Create. Your browser builds the archive and saves it straight to your device.

ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, or 7Z: which format?

ZIP

The safest choice to send to clients or colleagues. Windows, macOS, and Linux open ZIP files without extra software.

TAR

Bundles files into one archive without compressing them. Common on Linux and servers, and quick to create for very large batches.

TAR.GZ

A TAR archive compressed with gzip. A common way to share source code, backups, and website files for Linux servers.

7Z

Usually smaller than a ZIP, at the cost of a slower build. Windows 11 opens it, and 7-Zip or The Unarchiver on other systems. A password also hides the file names.

Prepare the files before you zip them

Sending a batch of website images to a client? Resize and convert them to WebP with the bulk image resizer, which already downloads finished batches as one ZIP. Save the settings as a recipe to repeat them on the next batch, or have paid plans deliver the results to Google Drive or Dropbox.

Create ZIP file FAQ

Are my files uploaded when I create a ZIP file?

No. FastConvert builds the archive in your browser and saves it straight to your device. Your files are not uploaded to FastConvert, so this tool works without an account and keeps nothing on our servers. Files you pick from Google Drive or Dropbox download from that provider directly into your browser.

Can I zip files from Google Drive or Dropbox?

Yes. Choose Google Drive or Dropbox, select the files, and they are added next to your local files. Their content is downloaded when you create the archive, so create it within an hour of picking them. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides must be downloaded as files first.

How do I zip a folder?

Drag the folder onto the page, or choose Folder and select it. Subfolders and file names are kept inside the archive. Empty folders are not included because browsers do not provide them, and system files such as .DS_Store and Thumbs.db are left out.

How do I create a ZIP file on Windows or Mac without a website?

On Windows 11, right-click the selected files and choose Compress to, then ZIP File. On Windows 10, choose Send to, then Compressed (zipped) folder. On a Mac, Control-click the selected files and choose Compress. Use this page when the files are in Google Drive or Dropbox, when you need a TAR or TAR.GZ archive, or when you want to choose the compression level.

Can I zip PDFs, photos, and videos?

Yes, any file type can go in the archive. PDFs, photos, and videos are already compressed, so the ZIP is barely smaller than the original files. To make photos smaller, compress or resize them first with the bulk image compressor, then zip the results.

Is there a file size limit?

An archive can hold up to 5,000 files. In Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, archives have no size limit beyond the free space on your device. Safari builds the whole archive in memory before saving it, so keep batches there to a few gigabytes. A 7z is built in temporary space on your device, then saved, and files from Google Drive or Dropbox are downloaded before it starts.

Which compression level should I choose?

Normal suits most files. In a ZIP, photos, videos, music, PDFs, and other archives are stored as they are: they are already compressed, so compressing them again mostly adds time. Maximum can shrink text and code a little more but takes longer. Choose Store for the fastest archive.

Can I create a password-protected ZIP file?

Yes. Choose ZIP and enter a password: every file in the archive is encrypted, and nobody can open them without it. AES-256 is strong encryption that opens in 7-Zip, WinRAR, The Unarchiver, or this site's unzip tool. ZipCrypto also opens in the zip tools built into Windows and macOS, but it is weak and only deters casual access. Choose 7Z to also hide the file names: a 7z with a password encrypts its files and their names with AES-256. The password never leaves your browser and cannot be recovered, so keep it safe.

How do I create a 7z file?

Add the files or folders, choose 7Z as the format, then select Create 7Z. A 7z is usually smaller than a ZIP of the same files, especially for text, code, and documents. Add a password to encrypt the files and their names. It opens on Windows 11, and with 7-Zip or The Unarchiver.

Does it work on phones, Mac, Windows, and Linux?

Yes. It works in a modern web browser on desktop and mobile. Adding a whole folder depends on the browser: on phones, select the files instead.
